The name to a town was given in honour of its founder the Austrian archduke Carl of Habsburg. In the next years were built lining, bastion and military and sacral buildings, of which dominates the main church of the saint trinity, and during centuries was foray with fire, overflows and various epidemic.

A very good geographical position has allowed a fast development of the whole economy, especially tourism. Even if target of transit tourists, Karlovac and it's surroundings offer many tourist attractions - in the town many historic and cultural monuments, hunting and fishing tourism, the nearby lakes of Plitvice and Bjelolasica ski-centre, rafting and canoeing on the river of Karlovac.
