Southern Dalmatia is the smallest and the most southern part of Croatia. This region does not have a natural backdrop like the rest of Dalmatia; rather, its backdrop is the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina which also has access to the sea by way of the town of Neum on their 9km long coastline.
Southern Dalmatia includes the area south of the Neretva River, the Peljesac peninsula and Dubrovnik which borders with Montenegro in the inlet of Boka Kotorska.
The main tourist destinations of Southern Dalmatia are Dubrovnik, Cavtat, Klek, and the Peljesac peninsula.
The city of Dubrovnik is the main centre of the Dubrovnik – Neretva County as well as the main tourist centre of Southern Dalmatia and Croatia. Dubrovnik is a city full of historical and cultural heritage and lies under the protection of UNESCO. Its beautiful natural surroundings, preserved cultural and historical architecture, ecological standards and tourist industry have made Dubrovnik one of the most visited cities of the Adriatic Sea. The Old Town of Dubrovnik is surrounded by a monumental wall which is 1940 m long and 25 m high. The oldest and most well-known street within the old town is Stradun.
Cavtat is located around 20 km south of Dubrovnik and is a well-known tourist destination offering a wide variety of accommodation such as rooms and apartments in private homes and villas, pansions, campsites and hotels.
Klek is a town located on the north-western part of the inlet near the Bosnian and Herzegovenian town of Neum. Near Klek lie the towns Duboka and Komarna with their beautiful and picturesque beaches. The inlet is filled with different species of fish and the townspeople are known for their fishing expertise.
The Peljesac peninsula, along with Istria, is the largest peninsula on the Adriatic coast. Its inhabitants occupy themselves with wine-growing (producing Dingac), shell ranching and fishing, as well as tourism. The larger towns on the peninsula are Orebic, Trpanj, Ston and Kuciste.
Southern Dalmatia also has the islands of Korcula, Mljet, Lastovo and the Elafit islands. Tourism on Korcula is a long-lived tradition although besides tourism its inhabitants are involved in wine-making and fishing. Along the coast of Korcula you will find the towns Korcula, Lumbarda, and Vela Luka, and in its interior the towns Zrnovo, Pupnat, Smokvica, and Blato. According to history, the famous Marco Polo came from Korcula.
Being that the island of Mljet is one of the islands with the most vegetation, one third of the island was declared a National Park because of its exceptional natural beauty, richness in fauna and flora, beaches, fishing grounds as well as its many cultural and historical monuments which make this island a wonderful tourist destination.
The island of Lastovo is separated from Korcula by the Lastovo canal. Among its lime-stone hills lie rocky fields as well as many caves, Raca being the largest. Along the north-eastern coast of Lastovo there are around 40 inhabited islands and cliffs which are called the Lastovo Archipelago.
The Elafit islands lay just west of Dubrovnik and are part of the Dubrovnik archipelago. The Elafiti (Greek for: stag islands) are closely tied to Dubrovnik and its history. Due to their beautiful nature and climate, the Elafit islands are a great place for rest and relaxation. The Elafit islands include the islands Sipan, Lopud, and Kolocep.
Southern Dalmatia holds the gem of Croatia, Dubrovnik. The city of Dubrovnik and its surrounding islands as well as other tourist destinations have their history, culture, beauty and hospitality to offer.
