Tar is een plaats in het westelijke gedeelte van Istrië op 10 kilometer afstand van Porec.Vanwege de ligging dichtbij Porec is Tar een bekende toeristische vakantiebestemming.

Gelegen is het aan de monding van de rivier Mirna en vooral ontwikkeld op gebied van de visvangst en het toerisme. Het bevindt zich op een vlakte onder welke de inham van Tar zich uitstrekt waar een klein vissersdorp en talrijke visrestaurantjes liggen.

In de buurt van Tar ligt het schiereiland Lanterna waar een moderne toeristische nederzetting met een groot aanbod aan accommodaties opgericht werd: appartementen, hotels, kamers en campings. Tar bestaat eigenlijk uit drie plaatsen: Tar, Frata en Vabriga. In het verleden waren dit drie parochiën, elk met zijn eigen kerk en klokkentoren: de kerk van de hl. Martin, hl. Mihovila en hl. Antona. De inwoners van deze kleine plaatsen houden zich traditioneel bezig met de aanbouw van wijn en olijfbomen maar steeds meer richt men zich op het toerisme.
