The island of Murter is the largest of all the islands in the Sibenik archipelago. A narrow canal separates the island from the mainland and they are connected by way of a 37m long bridge. The lime-stone part of the island of Murter is scantily covered in vegetation and its many sun-covered inlets are great for swimming and catching a few rays for example, the inlets of Slanica and Jezera.
The island's inhabitants are known for growing and cultivating olive trees as well as making olive oil, fishing, stock-breeding (grazing the animals on Murter as well as Kornati), and they are turning more and more towards tourism. Here guests can find a range of accommodations including apartments and rooms in private residents, bed & breakfasts, as well as camping grounds located right by the sea. The island also offers a wide range of restaurants which serve homemade specialties, mostly seafood.
Some of the larger towns on the island of Murter are Murter, Tisno, Betina, and Jezera.
The town of Murter is located next to the seashore and lies at the bottom of Raduca (125m high), at the edge of a fertile and lush field. Found in the centre of Murter is the medieval church of St. Mihovila which was renovated in the year 1770. Just west of the town of Murter is the Slanica inlet where guests will find beautiful beaches and camp ground. Tisno is a town which partly sits on the island of Murter and the other half on the neighbouring shoreline.
The town of Betina was founded in the 16th century by the inhabitants of Vrana who were retreating from the Turks at the time. Nearby, on Mt. Gradina, lay the archaeological remains of an old Illyrian-Roman city called Collentum. In the town of Betina there is a small shipyard where small sport boats are built and it is home to some ship-builders which are known throughout the Adriatic for their expertise. Betina is the perfect place to take a quiet and pleasant holiday, especially for those who love to sail. It is a known fishing town so all of its restaurants and taverns always offer fresh seafood daily.
The town Jezera (Lakes) got its name due to the many large puddles which would form in the island's valleys after heavy rains. On the nearby hill of Mortar lays an old tower which was used for signalling to seamen by using fire. Today, the town of Jezera is known to be one of the largest fish trading centres in Croatia.
