Anche nelle tradizioni popolari pertanto spicca chiaramente la cultura austriaca e quella slovena, presenti all'epoca dell'impero Asburgico: la festa folkloristica più sentita dalla popolazione è la festa di San Nicolo'e quella dei Krampus che si tiene ogni anno il 5 dicembre in tutte le frazioni del Tarvisiano.

La popolazione oggi è di maggioranza italiana, ma sono sempre presenti la minoranza slovena e tedesca. Tarvisio può vantarsi d'essere un comune quadrilingue unico in Europa: vi si parlano infatti italiano, tedesco, sloveno e friulano.
