Sarajevo è la capitale e la più grande città della Bosnia-Erzegovina. La sua popolazione si aggira attorno ai circa 500.000 abitanti. Conosciuta principalmente come scenario dell'attentato compiuto nel 1914 all'arciduca austriaco Francesco Ferdinando d'Austria da parte del nazionalista serbo-bosniaco Gavrilo Princip (avvenimento che fece scoppiare la prima guerra mondiale). La città ha ospitato, nel 1984, la XIV Olimpiade invernale e, tra il 1992 e il 1995, ha sofferto oltre tre lunghi anni di assedio da parte delle forze serbo-bosniache (durante la guerra in Jugoslavia). Sarajevo è localizzata vicino al centro geometrico del triangolo di terra che è la Bosnia ed Erzegovina, qualche chilometro ad est dalla sorgente del fiume Bosna. Il piccolo fiume Miljacka divide la città in due parti. L'antico cuore della città si trova in una ampia valle che ha una forma naturale di anfiteatro. La città si trova a 511 metri sopra il livello del mare, alcuni suoi sobborghi raggiungono i 900 metri sopra il livello del mare, il che fa di Sarajevo una delle città più elevate in Europa. Le cime delle montagne che accerchiano la città raggiungono e superano i 2000 m. Durante la seconda metà del XX secolo, città satelliti come Ilidza e Vogosca si sono fuse con Sarajevo diventandone dei sobborghi.
