Sebenico (Sibenik) è il capoluogo dell`omonima contea, un centro economico, culturale e turistico. La città di Sebenico non e' soltanto il capoluogo amministrativo ma anche il principale centro culturale ed economico della Contea Sebenico – Knin. Sorge in un golfo che è il porto naturale più protetto di tutto l`Adriatico. Non lontano dal golfo su cui sorge la città si trova la foce del fiume Krka, che è un passaggio lungo 2,5 km, collegato con il Canale di Sebenico.
Sebenico è circondata dalle vecchie fortezze di S. Anna, S.Giovanni e di Subicevac, ed è un bell`esempio di armonia tra architettura moderna e architettura medievale, fatta di viuzze strette e tortuose. La più importante testimonianza culturale cittadina è la cattedrale di S. Giacomo, la cui costruzione inizia nel 1431 e che viene consacrata appena nel 1555. Numerosi sono i maestri architetti che presero parte alla sua realizzazione, ma il merito maggiore è certamente da addebitare a Juraj Dalmatinac. Questo capolavoro di architettura croata è realizzato in stile gotico fiorito e le volte delle navate sono ricoperte da lastre di pietra, esempio unico nel suo genere nella storia architettonica rinascimentale.
