The city of Zadar is unique because of its thousand-year-old urban existence which makes it one of the oldest cities in Croatia. This is a city filled with cultural and historical heritage which can be seen today by just walking through the city.
Throughout the years, Zadar has been protected by the structure of a roman fort and many of the houses were built in roman and gothic times. Preserved from ancient times are its streets, parts of its water supply, which comes from Lake Vrana, a 14m high post and excavations on the Forum, and parts of Trajan's triumphal arch. Originating in the 14th century, from the renaissance era, are the doors of Sammicheli, the Morska Vrata (door to the sea) and the larger parts of the fortress and town walls. The city centre is surrounded by walls and towers which in turn provide protection for churches and other sacred buildings. One important pre-romanesque monument is the tower of St. Donat which is 27m high with 3 apses and its interior is divided up into two naves. The cathedral of St. Stosija originates from the Romanesque era and is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Croatia. Some other beautiful historical monuments are the Benedictine monastery complex with the church of St. Mary, the basilica of St. Krsevina, the church of St. Frane, the church of St. Simun, the large town square with the City lodge, the square of Three Wells and the square of Five Wells, as well as many palaces, villas and other pieces of cultural heritage.
