La citta' di Hvar si e' situata sulla costa ovest dell omonima isola, in una pittoresca baia. La sua posizione sulla parte soleggiata del mondo, con piu' di 2700 ore di sole all'anno le da il titolo di citta' piu' soleggiata della Croazia.

Il suo nome lo ha ereditato dal nome greco per l'isola di Hvar - Pharos. Hvar si e' situata sulla posizione della citta' vecchia - Stari Grad alla quale nel XIII secolo ha preso il titolo di citta' titolare dell'isola. Nel Medioevo la citta' di Hvar era il porto piu' importante dell'isola che offriva riparo a tutte le navi e barche durante le tempeste.

La citta' di Hvar e' un gioiello nascosto del tempo passato che vi incanta con la sua riva, le mura e la fortezza vecchie sette secoli e la piazza piu' grande in Dalmazia. Qui si trova il teatro piu' antico d'Europa aperto nell'anno 1612.
