Il Lago di Ohrid, nell'estremo lembo sud-occidentale della Macedonia, è un bacino naturale di origine tettonica, uno dei più vecchi del mondo e il più profondo d'Europa (290 m). La sua superficie di 450 kmq si estende per un terzo in Albania. La città di Ohrid è la mecca dei turisti in Macedonia, con una trentina di monumenti di interesse storico e artistico da visitare. Licnido (l'antica Ohrid) sorgeva sulla Via Egnatia, che collegava il Mar Adriatico al Mar Egeo; nella città vecchia è stato in parte riportato alla luce un anfiteatro romano. Sotto il dominio di Bisanzio, Ohrid divenne la principale sede vescovile della Macedonia. Nell'893 il vescovo Clemente d'Ochrida, discepolo dei Santi Cirillo e Metodio, fondò qui la prima università del mondo slavo e dal X secolo fino al 1767 il patriarcato di Ohrid fu assai potente. La ricostituzione dell'arcivescovado di Ohrid nel 1958 e la sua indipendenza dalla chiesa serbo-ortodossa nel 1967 segnarono due passi importanti nel processo di costruzione della moderna nazione macedone.
