Umago è il punto centrale dell`Istria nordoccidentale. Oggi Umago è la città più vicina alle più importanti reti viabili europee, distante da Trieste appena una quarantina di chilometri, e perciò, viene anche chiamata "la porta dell`Adriatico". È sorta sulle fondamenta delle rovine romane e a quel periodo risalgono le piccole viuzze che danno alla cittadella quel tocco speciale. Il territorio di Umago fu popolato fin dai tempi dei Romani, e nel Medio Evo divenne possedimento feudale del Vescovo di Trieste. Le vie della città, strette e tortuose, nonché le pittoreche botteghe, sono un tipico esempio di architettura urbana medievale, periodo a cui risalgono pure le mura cittadine, in parte conservate. La chiesa barocca dell`Assunzione della Beata Vergine Maria risale al XVIII sec., e l`organo che ivi si trova è del 1776. Interessanti da visitare anche la chiesa di San Pellegrino, sul promontorio di Rožac e la chiesa San Rocco del 1515, con il suo soffitto in legno decorato.
