Slavonski brod e' una città della Slavonia sul fiume Sava. Sorge sul luogo della romana Marsonia e serviva per controllare il traffico sul fiume Sava, che segna il confine con la Bosnia e Erzegovina; i resti della città romana si trovano nel Museo Civico.
La città appartenne alla famiglia dei conti Berislavic-Grabarski dal Medioevo al 1526, quando fu conquistata dai turchi, che la occuparono fino al 1691. Per difendere questo tratto di frontiera, nel 1741 il governo di Vienna decise di costruire una fortezza con caserme, residenze dei governatori ed edifici religiosi.
Danneggiati nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale e dell`ultimo conflitto, tali edifici sono ora in restauro: alcuni sono adibiti a uso scolastico, altri ospiteranno musei e gallerie. Oltre i bastioni si è sviluppata la città.
Lungo la riva della Sava si trova il convento francescano del 1725, restaurato di recente, con la chiesa della Santa Trinità, ricca di statue, altari fastosi e notevoli tele. Interessante è il Museo Civico Regionale con reperti archeologici, oggetti e documenti storici di tutta la contea.
A Slavonski brod ha trascorso gran parte della sua vita la grande scrittrice croata di favole, Ivana Brlic-Mazuranic. Slavonski brod è famosa anche per il festival del folclore (Brodsko kolo) che si tiene ogni anno in giugno, con sfilate, gare di ogni genere e un festival della cucina.
