Mostar e' il centro urbano principale della regione dell'Erzegovina, giace sulle due sponde del fiume Neretva, nel mezzo di una vallata sovrastata dalle vicine Prenj e Velez. Luogo di incontro tra due mondi, oriente ed occidente, fu resa famosa per il suo "Ponte vecchio", simbolo della convivenza delle diverse culture. Nel maggio del 1993 le forze croate della parte occidentale della città cominciarono ad assediare il quartiere mussulmano a est del fiume Neretva: l'assedio durò 10 mesi, i croati espulsero con la forza migliaia di mussulmani e ne massacrarono diverse centinaia, distruggendo contemporaneamente tutte le moschee della città risalenti al XVI e XVII secolo. Nel novembre del 1993 il famoso Ponte Turco di Mostar, che dal 1566 passava 20 m sopra le acque verdi della Neretva, venne distrutto dall'artiglieria croata. Una distruzione priva di interessi strategico - militari ma che aveva in sè una fortissima valenza simbolica. Oltre allo Stari Most furono deliberatamente distrutti, nella parte vecchia della città, diversi edifici di alto valore storico. Un reportage di distruzione a cui si devono aggiungere 5.000 alloggi del centro cittadino distrutti, industrie e infrastrutture devastate, serbatoi, pozzi, distributori di benzina e linee elettriche distrutte o sabotate nonchè ospedali e scuole.
