Strumica si trova nella regione della Macedonia orientale. Con circa 100.000 abitanti, Strumica e' uno dei centri culturali ed economici piu' importanti della Macedonia.
Il suo nome deriva dal cielo stellato che si apre sopra la citta' e che nell'antichita' si chiamava Astraion (citta' stellata). Strumica e' conosciuta anche per la sua torre dell'imperatore Carskoj kuli che si trova sopra Strumica. Nei dintorni si coltiva il papavero, il cotone, il tabacco, sesamo e anice e diverse piante che servono a produrre il famoso wisky macedone - Mastika.
La Chiesa di S. Leone dell'11. sec. e' la costruzione piu' conosciuta a Strumica. Gli abitanti della citta' la chiamano Vodocha, che significa "estrai gli occhi". La leggenda narra che qui l'imperatore bizantino Basileo II acceco' 14.000 soldati.
Strumica e' anche conosciuta per il carnevale tradizionale.
