Island Ciovo

Just about 30 km away by road from Split and 2 km away from Trogir is situated the island of Ciovo. Ciovo is connected with the mainland with two bridges. With its position Ciovo closes the Bay of Kastel.

On a surface of 28,8 km² are located several places: Okrug Donji, Okrug Gornji, Arbanija, Slatine, Zedno, Ciovo.

The ground on the island is mostly rocky and is not a surprise that here are located several pits of which the most known are the Bilosaj cave and Ana's pit. On the minor fertile field are growing almonds.

Gravel and sandy beaches are located in the Bay of Sladun on the west coast of the island. Along the south-east coast of the island are located the islands of Saint Eufemia, Kraljevac, Galerija, and their coast are ideal for an underwater fishing.

The island Ciovo was inhabited in the ancient Romans time while in the Medieval time on that area were located several small villages. Ciovo is full of historic catholic monuments; the medieval church of Saint Mary in Zedno, early roman church of Saint Peter, in the bay of Supetar nears the village of Slatina... In the XV century, during the Turkish invasion, the population on Ciovo increased significantly because of the refugees that came. From that period dates the church and the Dominican monastery of the Saint Cross. Many other, smaller churches, testify of a high level of spirituality of it's habitants.

Even if Ciovo is a sort of extension to the town of Trogir, it offers plenty of possibilities of relaxing and recreational activities and many monuments as a single destination. The Mediterranean vegetation, the archipelago with picturesque small islands, the gentle climatic conditions and beautiful hidden beaches in it's bays is going to delight you.
